Spielberg – Formula Student Racing with MUSE MyceliUm SEat

At this year’s Formula Student Austria at Spielberg’s Red Bull Ring, our Integrative Design / EXTREMES team joined forces with Campus Tirol Motorsport to push the boundaries of both racing and material innovation. As part of the competition, we tested our MUSE MyceliUm SEat prototype directly in the race environment—an ambitious step in advancing living materials from the lab to high-performance applications.

The collaboration brought together designers, engineers, and scientists who worked side by side with the racing team, refining prototypes and exploring how a bio-based material system could withstand the demands of motorsport. The project highlights our commitment to interdisciplinary research, where speculative design meets rigorous testing under extreme conditions.

The journey was also documented by TM Wissen, capturing not only the race but also the behind-the-scenes process of material development, teamwork, and experimentation. For us, Spielberg was more than just a race—it was a milestone in demonstrating how new material futures can be tested, challenged, and celebrated in real-world scenarios.
