TERRITORIAL STRATEGIES
The seminar on territorial strategies as part of Integrative Design with a focus on Extreme addresses some of the most pressing challenges of our time: climate and social crises. It engages with a thought-provoking selection of texts by influential authors such as Ulrich Beck, Felix Guattari, Dehlia Hannah, Bruno Latour, Timothy Morton, Saskia Sassen, Michel Serres, and others.
The following texts will be read and discussed throughout the semester:
-
Ulrich Beck, The New Measurement of Inequality Among Humans
-
Bruno Latour, Down to Earth: Politics in the New Climatic Regime
-
Felix Guattari, The Three Ecologies
-
Dehlia Hannah, A Year Without a Winter
-
Timothy Morton, Being Ecological
-
Saskia Sassen, Expulsions: Brutality and Complexity in the Global Economy
-
Michel Serres, The Natural Contract
(Subject to change.)
This semester’s focus is on the manifesto. Various references will be drawn upon, including the book Theories and Manifestos of Contemporary Architecture (ed. Jencks, Kropf). In small groups, students will develop architectural manifestos that can serve as guiding principles for a future architecture. These will be presented at the concluding symposium FUTURE ARCHITECTURE 3, organized by students for students.
