POST-GROWTH / Post-processing strategies for mycelium-based materials
In this seminar, we will work hands-on with mycelium-based materials, focusing on how they can be post-processed using plant-based glues, coatings, varnishes, and different types of paints or sealers. The aim is to better understand how mycelium composites interact with other materials and how their surface, texture, and performance can be altered through treatment.
Students will learn how to grow, handle, and work with mycelium, including the basic science behind fungal growth and material behaviour. The course is based on small-scale material experiments, where different combinations of treatments are tested and documented. Implementation of scientific techniques over the course offers a glimpse into the field of biodesign and working with biomaterials.
All samples will come together in a collective project: a shared wall structure built from the tested material samples. Each element represents a specific material combination, creating a visible archive of the experiments.
The seminar runs in block sessions, with fewer but longer workshops, allowing focused experimentation during class and independent work between sessions.
